CASE STUDY

Sub Saharan Africa - Ethiopia

(September 2020)

Ethiopia faces significant internal displacement. In 2018, Ethiopia recorded the third highest number of new displacements worldwide. Most of these displacements are conflict-induced, largely related to ethnic and border-based disputes.

RESPONSE

The number of IDPs reduced from 3.1M at the start of 2019 to 1.6M towards the end due to government led return operations. The combined efforts of international aid agencies and the government have helped provide some relief.

However, due to the Covid pandemic, there has been an increase in the numbers. It has affected the supply of various items and there has been a shortage of hygiene products. In 87% of the sites, there are food shortages.
